By Nolan Potts Massanutten won their sixth straight game as they defeated Broadway on Wednesday night by a score of 7-2. Blaine Smith picked up the win in relief for the Mountaineers (9-9), while Micah Canterbury took the loss for the Bruins (9-10). Broadway took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI single by Peyton Davis brought home Seth Moomaw, who had doubled earlier in the inning off of Massanutten starter Jaden Click. Massanutten responded in the third inning when Kaden Spaid stole second base with two outs and Kaplan Ambrose scurried home on the throw to second. The Mountaineers would take a 3-1 lead when Haden Madagan hit a two-run double down the left field line to score Spaid and Nick Arnold. The Mountaineers would add an insurance run in the fifth inning. Massanutten catcher Dawson Russell led off the inning being hit by a pitch. Bodie Pullen – the Mountaineers’ normal centerfielder who has a hand injury right now – courtesy ran at first base. With Nick Arnold at the plate, he stole second, then stole third on the next pitch, and then finally scored when Arnold grounded out to second base. Broadway would respond with a run of their own and make the score 4-2 on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bryce Turner that brought home Dawson Moomaw. The score would remain 4-2 until the top of the ninth. Massanutten loaded the bases with one out after singles by Spaid and Russell and a walk by Arnold. Haden Madagan reached on an error that brought home Kaden Spaid from third. The ball was then thrown away, and that enabled Bodie Pullen – who again was courtesy running – to score, as well, to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Mountaineers. Broadway brought the tying run up to the plate twice in the bottom of the ninth after loading the bases with one out, but Blaine Smith struck out the last two batters to end the ballgame. Smith went 4.2 IP in relief, allowed zero runs, four hits, walked two, and struck out seven batters. These two teams will face off against each other again on Friday, July 12 at Broadway High School at 7:00 PM.
