By Nolan Potts Bridgewater’s Chris Huffman threw seven dominant innings on the mound and had three hits and an RBI at the plate and Corbin Lucas had three hits and three RBI as the first-place Reds defeated Grottoes, 5-0 on Thursday night. The Reds improved to 15-4 on the season, while the Cardinals dropped to 11-9. Bridgewater got on the board twice in the first inning after an RBI double by Corbin Lucas and a bases-loaded walk by Grey Sherfey that scored Lucas. That was all the run support Huffman would need. The Fort Defiance HS grad and former Triple-A pitcher in the Padres’ organization went seven innings, allowed just five hits, and didn’t walk a batter while striking out eleven. He’s now thrown 33.2 innings this season and has an ERA of 1.07 to go along with 46 strikeouts and just four walks. He's also now hitting .418 at the plate this season and leads the league with 33 hits. Thomas Knight threw a scoreless eighth inning, and Jared Peake finished it out with a scoreless ninth inning. Lucas would add a two-RBI single in the second inning that scored Mason Hamilton and Huffman, and then Huffman would drive in the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single that scored Hamilton. For Grottoes, Tristan Gordan had two hits of the team’s seven hits. Marcus Smith started on the mound for the Cardinals and went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (only two earned) while striking out three. Both teams are back in action on Friday, July 12. The Reds will host the Stuarts Draft Diamondbacks, while Grottoes will host the Elkton Blue Sox. Both games start at 7:00 PM.
